Any RN_BSN program around Boston recommended?

Published

Hi, everyone:

I just got my RN license and am thinking to start my RN_BSN journey. I only know few schools offer this track such as Umass Boston and Northeastern. Any other school out there to choose? Which one do you recommend?

Another questions is I am in the process of job searching and will call nurse recruiters in different hospitals. But I am not sure what is a polite way to ask. And someone mentioned it's better to find out the nurse manager's name on the floor that you are applying for, but how?

Sorry to ask too many questions, and thank you in advance for your reply.

I am doing the UMass Boston online RN to BSN program and thus far I enjoy it. It is very convenient and low stress.

As for your job search, it is rough going from what I hear for new grads. Dont be discouraged and be persistent. Most hospitals have a window in which they hire new grads (usually twice a year) for there new grad programs. Some Boston hospitals will only hire BSN new grads (primarily Mass General and the Brigham), but BI and BMC still hire Associate Degree new grads. It is very competitive because of the nursing schools in the Boston area (Simmons, BC, Northeastern, UMass), which happen to be in close proximity to the major Boston hospitals. Good luck!

Depends on how much $ you want to spend...you get the same degree at both schools, but which one can you afford? I have two friends at the RN to BSN at UMASS Boston and they are enjoying it. However other schools might have an "in" at certain hospitals and their networking capabilities are better for when you are looking for a job. Good luck.

Curry College in Milton has a RN-BSN program. I'm in the Accelerated 2nd degree program there and the school/staff is excellent. Good luck!

Here's the link to the RN-BSN info:

Simmons College also offers the RN-BSN!

Salem State has a good one from what I hear, if you don't mind commuting.

I also wanted to add in regards to finding employment. It is correct that you should try and contact the Nurse Managers of the floor directly as they are the one who make the hiring decision. The only thing I can recommend in getting names is searching on the hospital website through their search link, calling the hospital main phone line and speaking directly with them. Granted, it is a direct approach which can have a great outcome. I worked as a Nurse Recruiter and personally know that sometimes HR can be a blackhole for perspective employees as much as we try for it not to be. I will admit that at times its best to either go around HR and get back to them later. All of the floors on the MGH website has a webpage that has HR contacts (with e-mail addresses) the Nurse Manager's name, the Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Operations Coordinator.

In the end persistence always pays off, hope this helps!

Thanks for all of your reply, Sumdae, Adrienne and Beck. I will check the two colleges that you recommend. It's good to know that Simmons and Curry college offer RN-BSN programs. Adrienne, thanks for your helpful advice, I will check the web site.

No problem! Keep us posted!!
