Question

Anxiety and Nursing

I've always really wanted to be a nurse. I have my bachelor's, and would go the ABSN route. I have anxiety and a hard time speaking up (in general, and specifically for patient advocacy, or if I made a mistake). Is this a bad idea then? Or are these things that I will learn how to deal with, and it's okay if I have a hard time now?

Entering a nursing program with anxiety is a common concern for many prospective students. Nursing education is designed to transition a student from a novice to a competent professional through structured clinical experiences and simulation. Professional communication and patient advocacy are considered clinical skills rather than innate personality traits.

I've always had anxiety as a person and a nurse, and still do. You grow and change as you grow older, being a nurse is no different. No nurse is perfect. Go for it!!

School will give you some skills to help, but ultimately, you will have to find strategies to manage your anxiety. You'll have to make yourself speak up, even if you don't want to or feel comfortable with it. My first conversation with a doctor made me so nervous but I felt better afterwards, knowing that I helped the patient. Remember why you became a nurse and that will help. Your confidence will grow over time with experience.
