Another Old (?) uniform question

I have noticed that all of the older uniforms, and even some of the more recent have these little white cuffs that are worn on short sleeve dresses. What are they for? Is it to prevent something from falling out of the sleeve?? Since only horses sweat, and ladies glow, I can't imagine what the purpose of this cute, but probably uncomfortable items are.

Cheers!

Probably because the in old days they rolled up their sleeves, and now without sleeves to roll up they put these cuffs on to follow the same or similar look. I remember the separate stiff collars and separate cuffs of the UK blue and white striped uniforms of the students and the all blue or green for the RN and EN. :nurse:

Cuffs - yes just a bit of the design because it looks 'nice' or has anyone any other suggestions?

I have worn cuffs...............!

they kept your sleeves from falling down because no matter how you rolled the sleeves up, they fell down. so the cuffs kept the sleeves up. they werent uncomfortable to wear and I must admit we looked smart.. but then I wore the whole lot.... dress, peter pan collar, starched white apron and cuffs! you rustled as you walked but boy.. did we feel like 'real' nurses!!

Here's a tidbit on old uniforms.....since this thread is already started, I thought I'd post it here.

I hear there's a Catholic hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas where there are some "older" nurses who are STILL wearing caps!

Gosh, I thought caps were long gone EVERYwhere!

Not everywhere. I've met some nurses who wear them because they like to keep with the old traditions. I'll probably be like that too when I finally become a nurse. :)

There are several places here in minnesota where cap in optional and some of the nurses do wear their caps. I wore mine when I worked in a convent for retired and sick nuns. They thought it was great. I also have seen some nurses in the hospitals wearing them.

This is going to seem a little off-topic, but, man what a job! :loveya: I'd love to work in a place like that. I don't suppose you know if they have any in the Virginia area? :D

I wore the lot navy blue dress, cuffs to keep my long sleeves up, white collor fastened with an old collor pin like the men use to wear, white stiff apron, blue belt with silver buckle, and for the rounds (Dr's) sleeves down and a stiff white wrist collor, hey that was only back in 1977.
