All about GPA's

I'm not sure, but I would think A's in the subjects necessary for nursing would be looked at more closely than old grades in another unrelated degree.

Both schools of Nursing, that I attended (ADN and BSN) did NOT have a requirement of a GPA. We had a "first on the list" with prerequisites requirement only.

If you do find there is a requirement minimum GPA you may ask for a ruling due to the fact your previous degree, not nursing related, is bringing the GPA down. You are now, older and wiser... right? so... there is a good chance, if it is needed, they will make an exception.

Depends on the program. I was in a similar situation and found schools that would only look at your pre req GPA, GPA of your last 30 credits or your overall GPA has to be over a 2.8...I found 4 accelerated BSN programs and many traditional programs will take you as a transfer student...

Oh yeah, one more school said they would evaluate students overall picture (gpa high in pre reqs). It was West Suburban College of Nursing in IL.

The school I attended only looked at the nursing prereqs. And even for that I only had to have a C or higher in all of my classes and I'd still be guaranteed a spot since it was on a first come first serve basis.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Call a nursing advisor if you are losing sleep over it.

Yep, that old GPA counts at my school. Luckily I have a 3.3 in my previous degree. Check out the policy of the schools you're interested in.

Hi ! I live in IL too.. which schools did you apply for? I am hoping to get into Loyola ABSN, NIU or UIC. Any word on these schools? I'm just a little worried because of my GPA from my previous bachelors! I am hoping that I am not wasting my time in taking the pre-reqs only to find out I am not qualified!!! Argh!!

I live in MI but my ex husband lives in IL so I had contacted WSCN because I briefly considered moving. I did not look into the other programs. What I did was contact each school and ask them about my specific situation. I had schools tell me flat out, my GPA was too low and not to apply and others welcomed my application with open arms. I tried to stick to schools that had admissions based on pre req GPA or would allow you to an essay or accepted letters of recommendation. Two accelerated programs in MI base admission on pre req GPA only.

It is not a death sentence by any means, I have been accepted to a 4 semester (24 month) traditional BSN program and am waiting on 3 other accelerated BSN programs.
