Algebra help please!!

Published

Hi all,

I couln't find the math thread with all the sites for math help, so I'm hoping someone can solve these two probs for me. It's been years since I have taken algebra and have no way to help my child. We kinda figured out the others but got stuck here. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,

1. 1/x+4=x-3/x x=

2. if 2x+3y=7,2x-3y=4 then x=

2x=7-3y; 2x=4+3y; therefore 7-3y=4+3y...3=6y ;y=1/2

2x=7-3(1/2).....2x=5.5 x=2.75

1/x+4=x-3/x x=?

1/x + 4 = x - 3/x

clear denominators by multiplying through both sides of the equation by a common denominator, which is "x", you end up with

1 + 4x = x(squared) - 3

simplify to 0 = x(squared) - 4x -4

this can only be solved by using the quadratic formula. you will end up with two factors, or two answers:

x =
2 plus 2 times the square root of 2
,and

x =
2 minus 2 times the square root of 2

to verify answer, plug the
2 plus and minus 2 times the square root of 2
back into the equation and solve. you should end up with 0 = 0

if 2x+3y=7,2x-3y=4 then x=

add both equations together, the variables with the "y's are eliminated, and you get the following equation.

2x + 3y = 7

2x - 3y = 4

4x = 11

solve for x, x =
11/4

if you want to find the value of y, plug 11/4 back into either of the equations in place of the x, simplify, and solve for y.
