AGENCY nursing???

Anyone else work "strictly" agency??? I live in Shreveport, LA and the monopoly of agency work is done by ONE hospital system here that has 4 hospitals in the surrounding area. HOWEVER, there are rumors that they are hiring nurses from the Phillipines to fill gaps so they won't have to use agency so much anymore in the future.

If you do work agency, are there lulls where you get cancelled sometimes more than others?

Do you think JUST working agency (when you need full time hours) is silly to do?

Looking for some honest opinions and stories on experiences YOU have had. ;) Thanks so much.

I used to live in Shreveport and it's a good place to be from...except for Superior Grill and Monjuni's!

I have worked agency, in one form or another, for most of my nursing career.

And that has been over 25 years. I also like the flexibility in working sevral different types of units in one hospital, and not be limited. I have had days where I worked 4 hours in ER, 4 hours in OR, and then 4 hours in either ICU or Endoscopy. You are alos much more marketable to a facility that way. I prefer being able to have control over my schedule. Sure there will be times when there is a lull in hours, but then other times you could easily work every single day. That is also why it is important to sign up with more than one agency. Certain hospitals use certain agencies, and if those hospitals have low census, then usually you can find something at another facility with another company. But you also need to be flexible when working agency, especially if you want to do it full-time. Example, if you are only able to work every M-T-W 12 hour days, you may have trouble some weeks.

But all in all, I would never do it any other way.................. :balloons:
