Looks like I might not get into the school I was planning to attend for my BSN and now I dont know whether to go to a local community college for an Associates-RN because of the fear of not getting a job because I dont have a BSN. I really want to be a nurse but I am afraid that I wont get hire due just having an Associates and I cant be without a job I have children and responsibilities....

Why don't you think you won't get in? I would try to improve whatever it is you think you are lacking in your application (GPA, volunteer hours, entrance exam etc.) and apply again for the next round!
Good luck!

It honestly depends on the job market in your area. Some places hire ADNs some don't. Research the hospital web sites and see what they want.

This.
Research, Research, Research; also, unless you received a letter (you did not state this in your post), you may get in; you MAY have to try again-and there's nothing wrong with that either.
Best wishes!
When researching your market don't be afraid to call the hospital's nurse recruiter. I've found that job ads can sometimes be misleading.

While it's not an ideal situation for those looking to work in major metro-area hospitals especially, there is nothing wrong with getting your ASN (ADN). I am also applying to my dream BSN program this semester, but have also been accepted to an ASN for the next spring cycle. I figure if I don't get into the BSN program I can always get my associates and the bridge to a BSN. In my area the bridge program takes a year and is mostly online.
For me, anything that gets me in the right direction is the right step for me! I already completed my associates degree in Nursing Transfer studies so I can hop right into a bridge program after I pass my NCLEX.

Good day, angela82:
A little fear, stress, anxiety can be a good thing if it helps motivate you. I'm going for an AD RN to start, and from time to time I wonder if there will be a job for me -- (if Jesus will it) new grad, just licensed, 53/54ish of age... hmmm Yet right now I'm 50 (my perquisites should be completed by mid May of this year), and that's a way off. Worse case, if God allows it, I continue in college for my BSN (which I hope to get anyway; but the "plan" was to get a job in between AD and BSN). God's in control, I'm not. He's Good, I'm not... no worries, and He's better at handling things than I am.
Go for your AD, do your best, make friends, enjoy your clinicals, get references, keep on track. Things will work out.
Thank you.

Honestly, I think this necessity of having a BSN has been a little overblown. Every time I go to a clinic or hospital, I still see a lot of LPNs, let alone ADNs. Many are working on their BSNs as well, but not all. If you do encounter difficulty finding a job after an ADN, you might find better luck applying to smaller towns. My town has no hesitation about hiring new grads, whatever degree they may have.
Plus you can bridge into BSN in maybe just a little more time than if you'd gone straight BSN.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. The only reason I'm not doing ADN first is because I already have a BS and it doesn't make sense to backtrack. But I will be applying to ADN programs in case I don't get it. Honestly if that ends up being the case I think it could turn out to be a blessing.

There are an insane number of jobs outside of a hospital- jobs that aren't LTC! I know a BSN who after 10 months of applying to hospital locations just got hired at a drug rehab facility bc she finally applied outside of acute care!
You can do this! Do not expect to work in a hospital. Times are hard, just focus on getting a job which u most certainly will, undoubtedly !
Thank you so much for your supportive words and encouragement! ....becoming a nurse is not an easy task but I believe that it is my calling and I would make an excellent nurse, I will keep pushing forward :)

It's really about the climate where you are. Find out what hospitals are looking for right now where you live. Once you're in nursing school (and even before), connect, connect, connect. Get on LinkedIn. Talk to nurse managers. The manager on the med/surg floor where I spent 3 semesters is now in one of my "dream" units, and lined up my preceptorship up there. I talked to her this week, and she said she wants to hire me once I'm licensed (which of course may take forever if the BRN can't sort out their computer system). Be your own best advocate and advertising. Post all over Facebook that you're looking for work. Apply like a madwoman when the time comes (in addition to this position, I'm applying everywhere). Tell everyone you know you're looking for a nursing job, as you never know who can be a good resource for you.
Don't let which degree you have dictate your journey. Besides, even if you "just" go for your ADN for now, nothing says you can't bridge to a BSN should you choose to do so later. Just put one foot in front of the other, and don't get too far ahead of yourself.

Don't be discouraged! There are still opportunities for ADN nurses! Hospitals that are Magnet status or are attempting to achieve it are drifting towards BSN but other than that I know for certain hospitals are still hiring ADN nurses. It does vary by location but you can talk to nurses in your community, search forums according to the state you live,
and search the web to get a better perspective. ADN programs tend to also know where there new grads go- you can check with them. Consider opportunities outside of your typical hospital setting. And if you only want to work in the hospital and aren't opposed to working while in school, apply for a PRN tech position. You can inquire about whether ADN nurses are hired during the interview. Whatever happens though, don't count yourself out! You just might get accepted to the BSN program! Good luck!!!!
