I'm a Guard flight nurse. You do need to work civilian clinical hours, for us 180 hours per year. Think about it, if you want to work in direct patient care, you need to maintain your skills. As reserve or guard they rely on your civilian experience. You might be nursing in difficult or austere environments, you don't want some wounded warrior depending on rusty skills. If the recruiter isn't a health care recruiter s/he may not know all the ins and outs of the requirements. Good luck.

@ 2033 I'm currently still in nursing school. I'm a junior working on my BSN. I graduate nxt May. I'm really interested in the AirForce Nurse Transition Program. Would u happen to know anything about it and if so how I could apply for it while still in nursing school? Thanx

Sorry but I don't know anything about that program. I was direct commission into my Guard unit for my specific AFSC (job). Once you have your degree you can apply for commission. As I understand active duty is pretty competitive but at least they don't require experience. For the guard and reserve, as I stated earlier, they want experience. There isn't time nor resources to teach you how to become a nurse at drill. I would contact a health care recruiter or a recruiter that works with the medical unit you would like to join. For you to get into an NTP program on active duty, you would first have to be accepted into the Air Force. Once you are in, they will then assign you to an NTP class located at one of the major medical centers within the Air Force. They also have contracts with some civilian hospitals to allow their new nurses to train. You will need to speak with a recruiter, who specialized in healthcare accessions. Regular recruites won't know the ins and outs of how the medical community works.
