Hi everyone,
Right now I am in my second semester at a community college and I'm coming here for some advice. For some time now I have been flip flopping between pursing Nursing or getting a business degree. I feel like I could do nursing and I would like some aspects of it but other aspects of it completely drive me away from pursing nursing. Some examples are some of the hard dirty jobs are like cleaning up diapers and throw up. But, on the other hand pushing meds and starting IV's really excite me. I tend to like some of the technical aspects of nursing. My school has an EMT and paramedic program, but the problem is that they really don't get paid as well as nurses. I'm sorry if this sound conceited, I am just trying to be as honest as possible. I guess I am just really scared of the future and just trying to not make any mistakes. I guess it is just the perfectionist in me. Also, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section. Any advice would be appreciated.

What type of nursing degree would you be pursuing? That will have a big effect on what kind of work you do. But what you really should be thinking about is if you can care for people every day you work. If your heart's not in taking care of people you may have trouble being satisfied with a caring career. Keep in mind if you are an RN there are a variety of nursing specialties that may be more technical.
I would be doing a BSN with maybe a NP in the future when I have experience. I do care about people, but I think that a lot of my research with nurses getting a little berated by patients just leave me having doubts. If you don't mind me asking which specialties are more technical? I know that beside nursing might not be my thing, but I don't know if that is med-surg or ICU

Can you see yourself working 12+ hours a day, weekends, holidays, nights while caring for scared strangers? Can you see yourself putting all of these patients needs before your own? Not even getting a bathroom break or a chance to eat for hours. Hugging and caring for these people when they get the worst news or the happiest news. And yes cleaning people up, possibly every bodily fluid from another person on you. I have been bit, punched, throat kicked, I have had urine, vomit, feces, all from other people, on me. Its disgusting but for me the good outweighs the bad. There is a lot of exciting things about nursing but if you cant see yourself doing those types of things then nursing might just not be for you.

What would you plan to do with a business degree? Business degrees are great if you have a plan in mind or willing to be competitive to get the best jobs. I'm just being the voice of reason here. Business degrees are a dime a dozen, you can certainly obtain outstanding employment, but business is competitive and if you aren't willing to be competitive you can land in a mediocre job with mediocre pay. I'm speaking from my experience as a person who got a dime a dozen degree, I had a "good" job, but it would always be mediocre with mediocre pay. You don't get rich off of nursing pay of course, but it pays better and more opportunities are afforded.
With that said, I wouldn't recommend nursing if you aren't committed to it. What is it you want to do in life is the question you need to ask yourself.
