Advice, please.

I recently discharged a patient with a diagnosis of kidney stone. She was pretty young, and when she arrived her BP in triage was 90/63. She was not a high priority and the BP wasn't rechecked by triage. She was AAO, w/ no c/o of dizziness or otherwise, so I assume her BP is normally low. Well, it was really busy in the ER that day and I discharged her with Rx's, instructions, and a urine strainer. She was going to see a urologist the next day. I let her go without rechecking her BP (overlooked it accidentally), and then I realized it was 90/63 when she checked it. I documented that she was w/ no complaint and was warm, dry, and pink when she left. Should I worry about this? Should I assume this was her norm? I should have rechecked it anyway, but she asked for a different pain med and I had a critical patient next door and just plain forgot. I feel awful. Any advice?:uhoh21:

90/60 is actually a normal blood pressure for many.

you did a good job of documenting her condition upon discharge. her b/p could very well be normotensive for her. should you have rechecked VS ? yes.

but you didn't, and I would not worry about it.

I agree with both! I wouldn't fret over it.

90/50 is typical for me, and it gets lower when I'm ill.

I can't count the times they've retaken it, or the md insisted on re-checking it himself. Amuses us when he gets the same reading. :p

My only complaints are when they threaten to reduce my post-op pain meds because of it (systolic in 70s), or when the machines keep re-inflating and my arm gets squeezed too hard for too long. lol

Me too. My normal is 90/60. My father actually takes medication to raise his BP. I don't remember the name of the med though.
