ADN L&D position

Specialties Ob/Gyn

I recently graduated from my LPN to RN program with an associates and my dream has been to work in labor and delivery. I've heard that it's hard for an ADN to get that position and BSN is preferred, anyone know how true that is? I definitely plan on getting my BSN ASAP but I'm hoping to still work in the area I'm interested in in the meantime.

No, it's not true. Some hospitals require new grads to have a BSN to work on ANY unit, but there is nothing unique or special about L&D that would require a BSN.

No that's not true at all. Where I live we accept new grads and ADN/ASN in the mother baby units. I'm a new grad ASN and got into PostPartum who will transition to LD. :)

Thanks for replying, I hope I have the same luck here in NY! I won't be too picky when it comes to finding my first RN job but getting L&D/Mother, baby would be a dream!!

How are you liking postpartum? Do you feel like the transition into L&D will be easy?

My goal is LD, but I have started with my ADN in PP. I've heard from many that sometimes you can take a stepping stone from postpartum to labor when the timing is right and you're not brand new. HOWEVER, there are many hospitals who will willingly train new grads to the labor side of life. Just keep applying!

No. Having done both...I can tell you L&D is a horse of a totally different color. I love Antepartum so that’s where I’m happy.
