Does anyone know if Introduction to the Profession of Nursing (HHSC 1040) has to be taken for nursing students beginning the program this fall? I noticed that on Macomb's website they added on this class to be taken before nursing program as well as 1-2 others to be taken while in the program. I checked and they don't even offer HHSC 1040 this summer. Thanks!

Did you check the pdf schedule or on webAdvisor? You will learn very quickly not to take the printed schedule very seriously, especially for clinicals. And, they like to assume you have no life and can add days to your schedule at the drop of a hat.
Anyway, I was told by some faculty that they were going to add a class/orientation required for people to take before the program starts so that they can see what nursing really is, and if they are cut out for it. In the course they will also learn to assess a pt and compelte a full assessment. They want to eliminate people form starting the program and dropping out, wasting spots for other people. I know this doesn't answer your question of when it is required, but thought I'd fill you in with what I know!

That sounds like a great idea.
I know nothing about healthcare and would love to have a better idea about what Im getting into.

I heard somewhere that the new curriculum is for the 2011 class, but I could be wrong. I guess they will clear it up for you at orientation. It is a really good idea though, we had 3 people drop out before the first 8 weeks were done, which could have given spots to people who really wanted them.
Thanks A4L4S and Corazon for your replies. I have a feeling it is for the 2011 class because it would be impossible for the nurses entering this fall to take it before the program starts. I noticed on the pdf that the classes now have new numbers also. Hopefully they will answer all the questions at orientation. When you two went to orientation, how long did it last? Did they have everyone that made it in the program there at the same time? Thanks!
A couple hours, and yes everyone goes. It is in may and people don't know their starting dates at that point. Believe me, if they decide they want you to take this class then they will make you fit it into your schedule.

My instructor told us yesterday that for the people starting this fall they are going to make it a 3 day seminar type thing. I'm not sure for the people after that, but it sounds like you will be able to fit it in before you start, kind of like an extended orientation. Good luck to you :)
We just had one drop out of our group and we just started a few weeks ago
Wow! Maybe the three day seminar will actually work out better, who knows. It is a good idea to start the nursing fundamentals class for future classes to help people better understand what the job requires. Thanks for your post.
