I received my acceptance letter last week and now (of course) I have a ton of questions.
Hopefully some of you already in the CC programs can help me out....
Will there be an orientation to the program? If so, when do they usually hold it?
Will I receive any communictaion from the school before the semester starts?
Any recormmendations for stethoscopes? My hearing isn't what it used to be!
Can we wear the cargo style pants or do they need to be plain?
Also, when do you find out which clinical you will attend? I'd like to get some idea sso I can arrange childcare....
Any advice, tidbits etc you guys may have would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Mary

I'm not sure what they do at other schools. But at mine we had an orientation. they gave us all the books, and the calendar and syllubus for each class.
I bought my stethoscope at life. I got a pretty nice Litmann. Works much better than the ones they give you in nursing school.
Are you talking about pants for clinical? There are some who wear the cargo style. It doesn't matter as long as they are all white.
My school gave us a calendar with the first blocks schedule at the orientation. But I'm not sure if all schools are different. There was a lot of complaining about our calendar (because a few instructors waste so much time we all fall behind) and I think they are threatening not to give us a calendar for block 2. I
s it just my school or does there seem to be wicked politics within every nursing school?
Thanks Phoenixgirl! Which program are you attending? You said that they had your books at orientation. Do you just pay for them there? Are they all new or is there a mixture of old books and new books to choose from?

At the CC I attend we had two days of orientation. We didn't get our books that day but we ordered our uniforms and stethoscopes. Most of us have littmann's( classic and master classics). They should have told you about orientation with your acceptance letter. I'm sure they'll be sending you lots of info in the mail. You have to have immunizations, cpr for HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, as well as other things. We also were told about our calculations exam which had to be passed with a 100% score!
As far as uniforms, we had specific lab jackets and shirts but we could choose our pants(although no scrubs or flare) and shoes. I got a pair of New Balance sneakers(all white). I used to work in a physical therapy office and the therapist always recommended those for people who are on their feet a lot.
I'm still in my first semester and I LOVE it! I know that being a nurse is what I'm meant to do. Congratulations on being accepted! :)

Hey........CONGRATS TO YOU!!! I know you are very excited!!
PhoenixGirl is giving you her side of the story, but so you know, the CC are different. We did not have our books at orientation, we were expected to get them long before. Your school will let you know what you need to do when. I was flipping out over everything but I could have just laid back cool and collected until the school told ME something!
Don't really have any other advice. Just wanted to congratulate. If you have any questions, just ask. Maybe someone will pop in that goes to MCC. That is what you really need...
Have fun!!:)

mattsmom, CONGRATS!!! I think every CC is different. At mine we had orientation 1 week before school started. We were expected to already have our syllabus and books. We had to have our CPR, physical and PPD's already done. We were given specific style numbers and colors for our uniforms, we had to have all white leather shoes with backs, a stethoscope (I recommend littmans although I have a sprague and its not too bad)....oh yeah and we had to have our criminal background check in 2 weeks before the orientation. We were told at orientation when and where our clinicals were, what was expected of us and when it was expected...we were told to kiss our families and friends goodbye for the next 5 semesters....we were given our first assignments which had to be done for the first class....good luck...I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. and again CONGRATS!!! :balloons:

I'm at the skill ctr at Estrella CC. My program is different, and it's a little more expensive, so our books are included. You will probably be buying yours at the book store and I'm not sure how all the cc's work. Maybe you get a list?
Make sure to tell us all about your program when you start. Jan, right?

MCC? Is that Monroe Community College? If you're in Rochester, NY MCC has contract with store at the Marketplace Mall where you can buy the scrubs, stethoscopes and etc. The books you buy would be at the bookstore. If you need amplified stethoscope, I would look for electronic stethoscopes. Most majore stethoscopes have them. University of Rochester book store has those and you can try them out.
Congradulations and good luck!
