Hi! I'd like to start a new thread for those who are planning to go to UCLA in Fall 2011. I've been so excited since I got my letter that I'm trying to be proactive about the enrollment process. I already emailed my acceptance. I just need to finish my taxes so I can complete the Need Access App.
This is a great place to get information regarding the financial aspect of the program:

Is anyone else taking Epidemiology at UCLA in the Summer? I tried looking for a cheaper school but this class is rare, specially for the summer session. If anyone found one, please share!
I'm looking forward to meeting y'all! Please feel free to pm me anytime. I'd like to hear from you!

Hey ADEcstatic! I just got off the waitlist and I'm super stoked to be joining the program this upcoming fall, and to meet all the other MECN students during the orientation in July!
As for Epi, I'd really rather not pay the 1200 bucks...I'm wrapping up my undergrad degree here at UCLA and I'm trying to sneak into an epidemiology class in Spring so I can avoid paying :-/ If there are any alternatives, like any CC, I'd really prefer that
Congrats to everyone who got in, see you in a few months!
Incudal,
Lucky! If you're able to take epi in the Spring, would it just be part of your regular tuition? I don't think I like the way they charge student. They charge students differently based on their status (undergrad or grad). Epi is a 50-level class that undergrads can also take but because our status is grad student, we're getting charged $248 for the same class. Eh?
Oh btw, can you tell me if the parking situation at UCLA is as bad as it sounds? I started looking into it and it looks like not everyone who wants to buy a parking permit will get one. I'm commuting from OC and so the public transportation will definitely be a problem for me. Do you know if they award more points for employed or unemployed students?

If I'm able to take Epi in the spring, it'll be Epi 100, not Nursing 50, and its included in tuition because (at least as an undergrad), you pay per quarter, not per unit.
The parking situation is worse than you can possibly imagine. I don't know if you've been to the West LA area before, but Westwood is as bad as it gets (anyone who tries to tell you that Hollywood/Santa Monica/etc is worse is LYING! :rotfl:). But, if you're a commuter, you can almost definitely get parking, especially as a grad student. My girlfriend commutes about a half hour and got parking no problem so if you're coming from OC you shouldn't have a problem getting approved. I don't think they award more points for employed or unemployed students.
Also, if you somehow get rejected for parking, you can always buy a parking space online via Craigslist or something similar.

Hello! I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone! I will be taking Nursing 50 in the summer. Although it is pricey, I feel like it will be a great opportunity to get to know our classmates, faculty and staff before the program officially begins. I live in Downtown and I will be taking public transportation to UCLA. I did it last summer when I took Micro at UCLA and it wasn't bad at all. Anything is better than sitting in traffic and wasting time driving around for parking.
Where do you guys live?
Hi mikomay!
I live in Buena Park. Because of financial constraints, I will be one of the suckers that will be sitting in traffic...at least for the fall quarter and until I find a reasonably priced apartment. I wish the textbooks come as audiobooks so I can at least be productive instead of wasting my time sitting in traffic! Parking didn't seem that bad when I was taking phlebotomy at UCLA 3 years ago. But then I did get a citation for parking at an area I wasn't supposed to (campus doesn''t really have clear signs does it?)

Hi! My name is Karine. I'm so excited (and a little nervous) to be starting the MECN program in the fall. I am taking Epidemiology at UCLA in the summer. Does anyone know what textbook we need for that class? I would like to get it early so that I can lower my workload in the summer. I need a couple of beach days!

Hi Everyone! My name is Sydney, and I am also super excited about being a part of the 2011 MECN program! I will be taking Epidemiology at UCLA over the summer too, and am looking forward to meeting the other students in our cohort, as well as getting to know the area.
I currently live in San Diego and am looking to relocate up to LA this Summer (commuting to and from SD would be a bit exhausting). If anyone is looking for a possible roommate let me know, even if you aren't looking for one until after Summer.
And congrats again to everyone on getting in!!

Hi Sydney,
I may be looking for a roommate by the start of the fall term. I'll be seeing you at UCLA in epidemiology but in the meantime my e-mail is [email protected]
Hi Karine,
I tried looking for more information on Epi but nothing is available yet. Probably because we're too early thinking about it . I think their spring quarter hasn't even started yet so nothing is available for summer yet.
