Accelerated Programs in Boston

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

I am just starting this process and am looking for whatever guidance I can get. First of all, I graduated from college in 2004 with a GPA of about 2.6 in Political Science(not good)! In short, I partied my way through college and this is not an indication of what I am capable of. I want to get into an accelerated Nursing program in the Boston area. I am planning to take a few pre-requisites prior to applying to prove what I am able to do.

Is anyone else in the same spot? Also, let me know where you are looking to apply and if taking these pre-requisites will even help.

Thanks!

Hi Jaquiep12,

Have you heard back from anyone? I am dealing with similar concerns. My undergrad gpa is a 2.86 and I have yet to find a thread about someone who had a lower gpa (under 3.0) and got into an accelerated program. It seems that everyone has had a 3.3 or higher :( My plan was to get a part time job at a hospital and take my pre-reqs this year and then apply for programs in 2009. However, I don't want to make this commitment and take this risk, if my undergrad gpa is going to prevent me from getting into a program! Any feedback you have heard would be greatly appreciated!

Take the required prereqs (almost all the same for most accelerated programs in the area) and get a 4.0 in them--then apply, writing a letter explaining that you were not a serious student in undergrad, but now that you have decided that nursing is the path for you, you have been able to focus yourself to achieve your goal of becoming a nurse. I'm starting the Curry ACCEL program in Jan '09--good luck!!

thank you for your advice, if you don't mind me asking, what gpa did you have in undergrad and did you have health care experience? I will definitely work very hard to get perfect grades in my pre-reqs, I just hope that will be good enough. I have heard that they look closer at your pre-reqs, than your overall gpa from undergrad. I have a couple pre-reqs from undergrad - psych and stats, but unfortunately I didn't do that well in stats so i'm thinking i should probably re-do that one as well, its just becoming a lot of classes. As of now, I have to take a&p 1&2, chem 1&2, micro, depending on the program, human growth, although some schools will accept my develop psych for that. The programs I'm looking at are curry, umass, mass school of pharm, mgh, and simmons. Do you know if some are more competitive than others?

Congrats on getting into Curry!! I have heard they have a great program.

Sorry! I didn't see your post until now. I had a 3.33 in undergrad, 3.83 in my masters program (both totally unrelated to nursing). Nothing I had taken counted towards prereqs, so I had to do everything (CHM I, Gen BIO, A&P I & II, MICRO, Human Dev, & Stats). I was able to fit it all in in one year (w/a 4.0).

I only applied to one accelerated program (had an ADN program as a backup), so I can't tell you how they compare against each other.

Good Luck!!

I am in the same boat. I had a 2.6 for my undergrad in Sociology and now i'm just starting my pre-reqs for the Accel BSN. I feel like if I dont get perfect grades I won't have a chance in getting into a program. With all the applicants, I know they are only looking for the best!

I am a really old returnee to the healthcare field. I have a degree in education with no prospects in that field where I live and went back for nursing. After doing my prereq's (with a 4.0) in all of them, I did not get into the accelerated program that I wanted. They seem like they were looking for experience in the healthcare field in addition to the gpa. I was devastated but am still going for the 3 year BSN. Good luck!
