Abuse at school

How do you deal with student abuse from teachers in nursing school? Nurses are terrified to address this topic, some even to the point of absolute denial.

What do you suggest to do?

For the nurses who promote it, how do you justify it? I just want to know the truth is all, and to go from there.

I agree with the others. It's hard to comment without knowing any details. Personally, I think that there is some abuse at some schools. That is the case with any environment. You'll meet some "nice people" and some "not nice" people everywhere you go -- in every profession -- in every environment that includes a lot of people.

However, there are also people with axes to grind -- who claim that every time they don't get their way on something, then it must be due to unfairness of some sort (abuse, bias, racism, etc.).

Throwing broad accusations around with minimal details suggests that the OP is just ranting because she angry about something that did not go her way -- not that she is really prepared to have a fair, unbiased discussion of the situation.

There are always at least 3 sides to every story. The OP hasn't even told us 1 side. Maybe she did experience/witness something that was truly abuse. I doubt we will ever know.

Do you think abuse doesn't exist then Roser? It must have been nice not having abusive teachers.

It was VERY nice. Happy to say that I didn't have a single "abusive" teacher.

No one is denying anything. There's not enough detail to even be able to deny.

What about not allowing a student to contact teachers for classes?

Or lying to students about what classes to take?

The weirdest one I saw was where a teacher tried to stand in front of the class, in a sort of ugly attack since she thought being the teacher in front of a class held unquestionable power, tell the students that it wasn't true they were being taken advantaged of, and said that we should never talk about it because just because everyone says it it doesn't mean that it is true.

Then, seeing that in a class of 24, even the students that want favor with any teacher wouldn't agree with her. She freaked out, turned on the air conditioner in a classroom where everyone was wearing a coat, and then proceeded to go through moods swings for the next four hours.

I could write a book about it. It is a scandal.

Yeah....I am guessing it is NOTHING like the Sandusky case. You should feel ashamed for even making that comparison.

I, and many others, reported to the department head and I personally did with the dean too. It took a week and a half to get an appointment with him, and I spoke for two hours, and he actually said that it just "wasn't a good program."

The weirdest part of the appointment with him was that, even though we both agreed that it was abuse, he loved talking about it. He even wanted me to talk through the first part of his next appointment! I didn't even know what to think of that.

That is the exact response that the Sandusky case receive. Who would want to admit that some scandal like that would happen?

To let you know, even the department heads admitted that the situations are abuse. Also so did the Dean, and the teachers don't deny it either. It isn't a matter of if it is abuse, it most certainly is in every way.

One of the responses of the department head was "Do you know how hard it is to get teachers here?"

I donno I wish I knew cuz im going through it right now.. clinical Instructors need to be tested for personality disorders.

You guys are so lucky. Likely you worked hard through nursing school, maybe working jobs and having kids....and working hard and intelligent towards yours goals. Then you achieved them.

It is different when there is a whole network creatively finding ways to make students fail. They have so much power too.
