ABSN schedule

Published

Can anyone give me a sense of the schedule (daily/weekly) of an accelerated BSN program? I have two small kids and am trying to understand the structure of the intense program. I'm in CA.

Whatever program you plan to go through will probably have an online course schedule that you can look at. I can tell you for my adn program, I have around 16-24 hours of clinical in the hospital each week (increases each semester), 6-12 hours of in-class time, required skills lab time (make your own hours), the rest (homework, clinic paperwork, studying) can be done whenever. I spend easily 40-60 hours per week on school. Closer to 60 most of the time.

Exact time commitments and schedules will vary from program to program. I'd look at your school's website, they should have more detailed information about their program. What won't vary is the high intensity of the class and clinical work. Accelerated programs are very intense and time-consuming. My program was 3 semesters over 1.5 years (no class over the summer months). A few did have children and made it through.

Thank you... Is there such a thing as an ABSN that is not so accelerated / a bit drawn out?

Not really -- that's kinda the point of the accelerated programs. Those programs are designed for people who want to work really hard and get done in as short a time as possible. However, if you want a longer, less intense program, you could look into traditional BSN programs. A lot of them are set up as two years of general ed and two years of the nursing program; students starting at the schools completed the two years of general ed and prerequisites, and then apply to the nursing program itself for acceptance, and people from outside the university can also apply for the nursing program itself. If you already have all the general ed requirements for the degree and the prerequisites for the nursing program, it would only be about two years of school, and would be slower-paced and less intense than an accelerated program.
