A Prereq In Progress When Applying?

Published

Hey everyone,

First-time poster here!

Does anyone know how nursing schools feel about which prereqs are in progress at the time your application is submitted? I know that generally, it's frowned upon to have prereqs in progress, but if I must have one class still in progress, does it matter which one?

For instance, would it be a bad idea to have a class like Micro or Physio in progress (because they want to see how you performed in those classes) vs. Statistics? Maybe it doesn't matter at all, but I figured it was worth asking.

Thanks for all and any input!

Totally depends on the school. The BSN program I'm applying to is fine with prereqs in progress, as long as they're finished before starting the program.

Agree with Memphismom, totally depends on the school. Some schools are absolutely OK if you are still in progress on prerequisites. Some absolutely will not have even one outstanding. And there are schools in between. My ABSN program stated at the open house that you can have at most 1 outstanding at time of review. I had 2 but I had good credentials (GPA, etc) and I was first waitlisted and then got in when someone cancelled. Ask you school. I think if you apply and you already have a chunk done and have done well, they see you are serious and can offer a little more flexibility.

Having one prereq in progress isn't a big deal. I was just accepted to a super competitive Accelerated BSN program with Microbiology in progress (have a 4.0 GPA in the other prereq classes).

Specializes in Maternal Child, Home Health, Med/Surg.

It really depends on the school. You'd have to check with your school to see if it's ok. However, I'm sure they won't mind. Mine allows you to have pre reqs in progress as long as they are over by the end of the application date.

Some say you need to have all of your sciences done before applying and will only let you have things like history or humanities pending. Ya know, the not so important prereqs. ;) Good luck! It should say on the school's website.
