Managing stress in the workplace can be hard at times. Some of the simplest tips are to make sure you eat and take your breaks. Eat before the start of your shift, make sure you take your meal break, and take a few small breaks from your work. I work 12 hour nights so I make sure I eat a meal before work, a meal at work, and take a couple small breaks. Make sure you take care of anything urgent and then step away for a bit. Charting will be there when you get back.

I always tried to get some time off the unit to avoid all the craziness for a bit. Just going to the break room was enough some days. Other days I would have to take a walk off the unit to help decompress.

Give your best at work, but realize you are only human. Be honest, yet forgiving of yourself in times of stress. Realize that this shift will END and this stressful moment will pass. Know that you can only do what you can do. Learn how to prioritize. Always be kind to your coworkers and they probably will be there for you when you really need them. Try to learn to leave work at work. Strive to appear calm on the outside as it does help to feel more calm on the inside. If you are extremely stressed/upset, take a moment alone if you can in the bathroom to stamp your feet or whisper the words you really want to say to someone, but know you shouldn't. Work to be mentally healthy in all areas and relationships in your life. If you are depressed/anxious, reach out for help from a professional. Because if your personal life is in chaos, the stress at work will seem magnified.

Because of staffing on my unit, it's hard for me to leave - we actually take our breaks and lunches at the nurses station. So what do we do? Once we've finished everything that needs to be done, we will hop on the Internet. Play games on our phones. I'll watch movies on my iPad. Talk with each other and the doctor.

When I leave work, I leave work. No dwelling on if a patient is going to file a complaint, or how the family of the cardiac arrest patient is doing.
