My daughter is a senior in high school this year and is planning to major in nursing. She has been accepted to the U of I, SIUE, and St. Ambrose. After visiting the nursing department at the U of I she has decided to rule that one out. She is confused about the other two, SIUE and St. Ambrose.

She received a scholarship and has already been accepted into the nursing program at St. Ambrose, but we aren't confident their program has been established long enough or how it compares to other schools.

Does anyone have any advice or information about either one of the two schools above?

Are you talking about UIC. For the first two years, I don't think it really matters where she attends (community college or University).

No, we have eliminated UIC. She has already been accepted into the nursing program at St. Ambrose and can apply to be accepted into the nursing program at SIUE after the first semester.

I know UIC is one of the best nursing school's in the united states. It's in the top 10 nursing schools nation wide. Again, if your daughter wants to go to a school that is out of town, st. Ambrose isn't bad at all. Nevertheless, you would have to consider the out of state tuition fee's. These fees are normally at elevated levels. Your daughter should decide where she feels more comfortable attending.

I'm not sure about any of these schools, but whatever you guys decide, make sure the classes are small and the teachers are good. The best is if you can get in touch with current students from the programs in question. They will provide you with good info. Another idea, if you can get the names of some of your daughters potential professors-like, off the schools website- you can check out ratemyprofessor.com and see how students rated the professors. Good luck! :)

If I were to do it all again, I'd do all the prereq's, if she's a graduating HS senior, at a community college or an in-state school, then transfer to a BSN program- or stay at the comm college level. I'm a returning student (in my "senior" year in the fall), and for all the $$$$ I've spent at a private school, I think my nursing education would have been better spent at a community college.

That being said- if I were a graduating senior and wanting to go to a 4-yr and leave home, I personally would go to a state school with a BSN program.

Having done private schools my entire life (minus CC science prereq's), I personally am not going to spend my $$$ for my kids at private schools, when the education is just as good, or better, at public schools. IMO, of course.....
