Hey everyone, I'm currently finishing up my pre req's for our local ADN program. One of them being the certified nursing assistant certificate. I realize that every state and school has their own requirements but does anyone know what extra classes and/or tests would be required to become a patient care tech instead of cna? Thanks!

Our school doesnt require you to be cna certified. The hospital nearby school offered an extern pct program that students could sign up for. I did the program this past summer. They trained us for about a month and then we were pct's. I think their main objective was to get students working there and hopefully when the students graduate they would work there. I only work prn when on break and feel its a big help in dealing with patients. You should check around any local hospitals and see if they offer any type of programs for nursing students.

Same here. Just two weeks into my clinicals, with no prior patient care experience or any kind of special certification, I was offered a per diem job as a PCT on the med/surg floor where we're doing our rotation. The DON just put up a note that they would like to hire from among the students and voi la.

Our school actually offers a PCT class and a Pediatric PCT class along with NA Training. But, it also seems that hospitals will hire CNAs and train them themselves to do PCT work.
