Would an OR nurse manager be offended if an experienced nurse called her directly to see if she has any job openings? Would she expect applicants to apply through human resources instead of calling her directly? Or would the nurse manager be super happy that an experienced nurse is calling her and offering to work for her?

I did that once. A rep told me about an opening at a neighboring hospital. I called the nurse manager and she did have a opening. told me to come for an interview. When I got there, I had to go to HR first and fill out an application, and then I went to my interview. She was very happy that I called her. I also know that my current manager would love that as well. Anyhow, that's just what has happened to me...

I have found out over the years that most OR managers do like the direct contact approach because HR tends to lose applications!Your app sometimes just sets in HR never being forwarded to the OR in a timely matter. I think this holds true for the experienced RN but not necessarily for a new grad. It doesn't hurt though.

I too think most NM in the OR would appreciate that. Often, HR staff doesn't really have too firm a grasp of what is needed in the OR. I've seen managers get frustrated because they have openings and are unable to fill them because of a glitch in HR. I think it shows initiative. I say go for it.
