Respect for Nurses-- I've got it

I am a second semester NS in an ADN program and I think I have learn a few things: This is the hardest thing I have ever done, the amount of material we have to cram in our brain is scary. Everytime I learn something I realize how little I know.

Nurses are awesome, whenever I hear people complain about the lousy nurse I want to scream, they are not lazy, they are extremely busy, constantly thinking, planning, implementing, they are not ignoring you, they are caring for other patients with more serious issues, they know you are there and they will get to you asap, they are not sitting at the nursing station doing nothing, they are charting, reading orders, labs, etc, they are always thinking about thier patients, even on the few breaks they get, They are not uncaring or mean, they have to get you out of bed, do invasive procedures, make you move, turn you over, change you gown, listen to your abs, lungs, heart because it is for your good not because they feel like torturing you. Nurses are special people and I really hope to become one of them

Just venting after having a patient at clinical spent 20 minutes complaining about the nurses all morning

many patients feel the same....and I always explain that "you have a choice.....I can either do this now....and we can do all this in one fell swoop.....OR....I can come back later, spend all night trying to convince you to do x, and generally tell the next shift that they need to do x, and we'll wind up in a hassled circle over and over, until you want us to just leave you alone....

Also, some patients don't understand that meds are ordered every x hours for safety reasons....I'm not going to give you ativan every 2 hours, when it's ordered for every 6.....

I have respect for good nurses. However, I've seen my share of bad ones that prefer to sit at the nurses station an gossip rather than do their jobs.

I have been a nurse for 19 years and the biggest thing I learned in school was what you said, the more you learn, the more you realize how much more there is to learn! That is an attitude that has kept me learning more all the time. You will make a great nurse!:yeah:
