Well thanks to the information posted about Excelsior College, I have yet another brick wall starring me in the face.

Since Excelsior is changing it's policy beginning Jan 2003, I now have to reconsider my direction.

I tell you, I am beginning to think like many on this BB that there really isn't a shortage at all. How many obstacles will people who genuinely want to be a nurse have to face?

If anyone knows of another non-tradtional program, would you let me know? Also, I am once again surfing the web for evening school programs. All the schools in my area either (1) don't have evening programs or (2) the ones who do have a 2 year waiting list.

By the way, for evening programs I live in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

i totally understand your frustration regarding the whole nursing thing! i don't think you're alone...i think there are a lot of adult students out there who want to merge back into nursing who are having difficulty finding programs that fit their lifestyles (ie., night school, non traditional programs, etc...). i'm sure you wont be the only emt who will be significantly impacted by the recent changes with excelsior.

i wish you all the best of luck in finding alternatives to getting your nursing degree. just hang in there....we can do it!!!!!

My advice? Enroll now in the programs with the 2 year wait. Also keep looking in the meantime. Two years from now you'll either be well on your way in another program or more than ready to enter an evening program when it opens. You never know! If you don't get on the waiting list now, in 2 years you'll be facing ANOTHER 2 year wait!!!

Those relying on only (to qualify for admission)EMT Basic or EMT Iintermediate must be State or Federally certified AND have completed 1,000 hour of direct patient contact after certification.

Not exactly unreasonable given the fact that Excelsior does not provide clinical experience. They only test you out of clinicals. So in just 2 days you have to prove you have the skill compentency of an RN.

So if this is your situation, volunteer and get the experience. No place just hands you a degree. Or get hired as a paid EMT. You sure don't get paid in a traditional school for your clinical experience.

Just 20 hours a week of patient contact. You could have this requirment met in less than a year.
