hey everyone.

I stsrted the nursing program last week. I am also working full-time. Our instructors are telling us that we need at least 20 hours outside of our theory class per week to be sucessful. Can anyone out there tell me if this is true? I know everyone has diffrent ways of learning, and im sure some topics will be harder than others, but 20 HOURS just for lecture?

THis does not include clinical time which could be anywhere from 10-15 hours per week. I guess i just want to know if they are trying to scare us!!!! (ITs woking!!!)

Is anyone else out there from Maryland or New York area?

I'm a native Marylander; just moved "south of the border" a few years ago. What part of MD are you from, and where are you going to school? As for your question, 20 hours does seem a lot. I've heard that you should estimate about 3 hours of study time for each hour in lecture. Good luck in your program...

lets see; if a person studies 20 hours a week and there are 7 days in a week, that adds up to be over 2 hours a day. now, the thing is, is this for one class or for several. a person just might end up studying more. hummmmm.... all the best to you.

I am from Ellicott City and i attend Howard Community College.

I just moved here about 4 years ago. I guess i just dont feel like the instructors care if we fail or not. Maybe they are trying to weed out the ones who dont want to work. I have nothing aganist working hard...but i need to sleep also. I've only been through one week so far. Maybe i just need to get used to it.

Hmmm....some things I could have used 20 hours of study for, and others, I didn't have to study at all.....

Either way, you'll figure out a time for you and it'll work.....

In the first 2 years of my 3 year program I studied 3-4hrs per night and usually studied 2-3hrs per day on weekend for tests or assignments. This ,however, was the method that worked for me.

Look at college the same way you look at a fulltime job. Anticipate spending as many hours at school as you would at a full time job,which is 40 hours per week. that is why most schools recommend that you do not work while attending school. It takes alot of time. maybe you can look at it this way. For every 1 hour of lecture you will have three hours of study/planning/prep time. 12 credit hours = 36 hours per week,so just a little shy of the forty hour mark.

I have some healthcare backround already but biology is a bit of a week point for me. Did anyone find the biology, physiology and or pathophysiology really hard? I'm worried I'll have to get a tudour just to pass. There is sooooooo much memorization in the human body, it's overwhelming.

i too had a medical background and found the anatomy and physiology courses tough, and i had been out of school for a long time.. really tough instructors.. those were the courses that i spent the most time on, rewrote notes, made flashcards, study groups.. now it's much easier

i agree with previous posters, some classes you will spend more time studying and some not as much ! study and read in short increments, that helps too. :)
