Has anyone attended Al-Anon or Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings? I did a LONG time ago but am very scared to go back but I think I may need to. I am scared to go alone. What can I expect if I do work up the nerve? I want to help myself but I don't want a big pity party (for lack of a better expression). I am tired of the focus being on the problems, I want it to be about me and improvement on who I am. Will I get this?

While I have not attended Al-Anon meetings myself, I have known (in my professional capacity) many people who feel it has helped them a great deal. I am a big fan and always encourage people to at least try it. You can expect to be welcomed by the group. You can expect to be offered support in dealing with the problems/issues that brought you to the group. You can expect to not be pressured to speak unless you want to. You can expect to meet people doing their best to help each other deal with the common problems they face being a family member or loved one of a person with an addiction problem.

It is true that, because the meetings are non-professional, self-help groups, each individual group has its own character -- some are great, some are not so great. You might find that a particular group/meeting does nothing for you, but it might be just right for the next person who walks through the door. There are occasionally some meetings that are primarily "pity parties." You may have to do a little shopping around to find a group that will work for you, but I encourage you to do so!

Hi thrashej, I attend al-anon weekly. Its the best thing I ever did. My group is great and very supportive. Get the books "Courage to Change" and "Hope for Today". Every day read the reading for that day. You will have a safe haven where you can discuss anything that is bothering you. Everyone in the group understands exactly what you are going through. There is nothing that you will say that someone else has not experienced. There is no judgement, no codemnation, no critisism. I am so glad I went back, even when I dont feel like going, I go and come home feeling better. I agree with the other posters, you have to shop around, you will find your "group". I also went in to counselling which helped alot. Hey T come back, we will welcome you with open arms :)
