i would really appreciate for your answer .

i am male nursing student . but i have moderate amount of hearing loss . i use hearing aid . i am thinking about going to nurse anesthetist course .

i am wondering ...because of hearing problem ...it will be difficult to perform the anesthetist job ? anyone in nursing profession please let me know which speciality would be better for heard of hearing nurse ?

i work with an anesthetist who has difficulty hearing - and thus doesn't use an earpiece - but other senses and technology to make up for it...i do not think you should let it stand in your way!

i have seen many a crna with a hearing aid and it does not make them

any less of a nurse. any one who would have a problem with it has not seen it

and as long as you can hear well enough to do your job don't worry about it. i worked in icu and pacu for 17 years and never had a problem. oh yes, i am a srna. :) gc

Wow, I thought the SRNAs/CRNAs here would say your assessments wouldn't be complete with a hearing impairment. So you think if a person has a hearing aid and can function in their job, it would work okay? What about hearing those subtle lung sounds? Is it perhaps possible to achieve a similar effect using a hearing aid and sensitive stethoscope, or would the hearing-impaired person always be missing something?

I am really curious here, not trying in any way to put down the hearing-impaired or anything else. If I used insensitive language. I apologize. I truly don't know what the appropriate vocab is these days. Anyway, if the OP can do a safe quality job, more power to him/her.

I have a friend he is an MDA wears hearing devices for both ears, has no problem with his hearing impairment. As for hearing those subtle lung sounds I would think you could obtain a hearing device that would connect to the precordial stethoscope used during anesthesia. Monitors also are there for determing adequate ventilation ie ETCO2, TV etc. If the hearing loss isn't too severe I don't think there would be a problem. Good Luck

ya know you would be surprised at how many MD's with good hearing have let a murmer get past them and lo and behold the chick with the hearing problem finds it in the recovery room, if i couldn't hear the lung sounds on my pt I wouldn't be in patient care. GC

ps they do have very sensitive steth. now you can even get them with a volume control.
