Year of Experience

Hi Allnurses,

I am curious as to how you count the magical year (or other specified unit of time) of experience. Do you count it to the day i.e. January 25, 2019 to January 25, 2020; or is January 2019-January 2020 specific enough?

Basically do you feel it’s required to be a full calendar year to state you have a year of experience?

Thank you in advance!

I count three ways, depending on the situation: x amount of years since I graduated nursing school, x amount of years since I passed the NCLEX, and x amount of years since I first started working as a nurse. It's only a difference of a couple of months either which way, but it depends on the situation.

Just want to add that some people even consider it to be a year off orientation (which will really put you at a year + the length of your orientation)...

Also keep in mind that there will be a bit of a lag between when you apply and when you actually start. The application/hiring process takes weeks to months, and many hospitals require a full month of notice. You may end up applying with one year of experience, and not actually leaving until you have a year and three months.

Day off of orientation = day 1 of experience. 365 days later, there is the year of experience. ? Just my own method of accounting.

Thanks everyone!
