Stool OB, or guiac stools "x3" means that for the next three poops, you get a sample from each. Three in total, with results recorded for each. There'd be no point in collecting three samples at once; the point is to see if/when blood shows up in the stool.

Don't know about the cardiac enzymes.

How I interpret the order is cardiac enzymes x3, which mean you will draw trop,ck,ckmb q8 hr (x3). I interpret the stool order is a 1 time spec. It does not say x3 for the stools, does it?

On our unit, it'd be unusual to see a guiac order (or OB stool order) for one specimen...they say guiac times three. You'd actually get two samples from one stool--if possible a bit from each part--then that constitutes one sample. Repeat two more times, on subsequent stools, for a pattern.

:yeahthat:

The reason for the 3 draws for CE q 8h apart is to see if there are changes in any of the 3 CE values during a 24h period. Each of the 3 CE markers has a different peak (time wise) if there is damage to the myocardium. Changes in values, either up or down, can help determine the time &/or degree of damage to the heart muscle. Also, it takes time for the CE to show up in the blood-so, if the MI has just started, you might not see any + result on the first draw; but, the second draw 8 hours later will be +.

I agree IF the order says X3! However, in the initial post, it did not specify X3 did it?

occult blood--collect the next three stools.

cardiac enzymes--for troponins, they are drawn every six hours x 3.
