Work vs. Clinicals

Published

I start the pn program at Logansport Ivy Tech August 24. I was so happy to learn I got in. I'm very excited. Everything seems to be falling into place except...my job. I've been at the same job for almost 6 years. I am a city employee working the midnight shift Sat. through Wed. I almost never call in sick, actually I called in once this year. Anyway, my clinical day is Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. my shift ends at 7:00 a.m. My boss will not try to work with me here. I asked to have my days off changed, come in early so I can leave an hour early, anything. BUT they won't even get back to me on the subject. I know many people quit their job when they start the program, but I am a single mother of two children. I cannot afford to do this. I almost feel like giving up and dropping out but I've worked so hard to get to this point. It's really not fair. I don't know what to do or where to turn. It would take me at least 30 minutes to get from my job to the clinical site. Any suggestions or anyone in my situation??

Can you actually go in and speak to your boss face to face? TELL them this is what MUST happen for your schooling... demand an answer right then and there.

Don't know if it'll work, but it's worth a try.

Good luck!

Go to your boss and reiterate your needs. If he doesn't respond, go to his boss, and his boss if needed. Keep going until you achieve your goal. The city has a Mayor, right? See him if you have to...

Thank you.. I'm going to speak with her today! If she's not in the office, I will have to wait until Monday.. The bad part is these women I work with, well I don't think they want anyone else to move on to something better. There's a lot of jealousy in the office and stuff like that.

I get to use my vacation and sick days for my clinicals. I'm pretty happy with this outcome, because I get three days off instead of two... :)

things work out! I'm glad for you!
