Will they even take me?

Hey guys. First I just have to say how amazing this site it. :) I'm not a nurse but I'm hoping to become one eventually. I live in Shreveport, Louisiana and am hoping to take the LPN program at the local Louisiana Technical College (Anybody know anything about their program?) but I don't know if they'll take me. First I have to take their entrance exam. But thats not my main concern. Before I decided that I wanted to go the LPN route I was attending LSUS. This was over 2 years ago. I ended up battling an alcohol problem and failing my 2nd year there. Could this keep me from getting accepted? I'm not really sure how it works over there. But I'd rather hear something from you guys first. Kind of a way of preparing myself for the worst. Thanks in advance guys! :)

You might be able to find out more about that LPN program in the Louisiana Nurses Forum. On the separate issue of getting admitted, there is only one way to find out, which would be to put in an application. The LA Board of Nursing would be the place to check if you had questions about becoming licensed with a criminal history (if applicable) and substance abuse issues.

Will this place even take you? Well, you'll never really know unless you try. Many good nurses have battled chemical dependency issues with alcohol and/or illegal drugs in their pasts. You just might be pleasantly surprised if you go through the application process and be fully honest along the way. Good luck!

Well, I was more worried about the fact that I'd failed my classes because of it. I've met a lot of nurses who were recovering when I was in treatment. Its just that I remember reading a thread about a woman who couldn't get in to LPN school because she failed an english class 20 years prior! It got me worried. lol

Don't ever measure yourself against another person. There could have been a million variables that did not enable her acceptance into the program. For example, here in FL, all you have to do is prove you graduated from high school and pass an entrance exam (background check...etc). So there may have been something else to his/her story...focus on your own story and write the ending!!!

I think nursing school takes into consideration the whole person. After high school, I went on to university so called "pre med" where I proceeded to average a GPA of about 1 for the first 2 semesters. Not because I was stupid, but because it was what I was supposed to do after high school and I was so over school at that time. I failed all my GE and even electives. But once my school saw my test scores and I did a little explaining, they had no problem accepting me. As for as your previous alcohol problem, unless there is something of a criminal record, I wouldn't bring it up, I don't think it's the school's business. Best of luck to you!!;)
