I just recently moved back to Vegas without having a job lined up before I got here. I have been a RN since 1994 and have never had much trouble getting a job. I must've filled out 10 applications online and haven't got one single call for an interview. I think I am going to start going to the places and speaking to people in person. There are so many jobs listed at the area hospitals and the state but nobody calls for an interview. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I might get a job or what your experiences have been like finding a job here in Vegas? It's been a long time since I had to find a job so this is like being a new grad again. OUCH!

I can tell you they are shorthanded everywhere but they do not hire because hospitals are paid via property taxes. The foreclosure rate here is so high, there is no money!!
my advice? Do not get sick!! ER nurses are working their butts off that I have seen so I imagine is the rest of them!

our cenus was so low this weekend we had to call off 5 RN' s we only had 14 patients on a 51 bed unit. the er's maybe full but the people that are coming are not be admitted like they use to be. night shift sunday consisted of 1 charge nurse and 2 RN's no CNA and no unit coordinator.
i hope that you can find a job soon. please keep us posted.

Not all hospitals are paid through property taxes, though UMC definitely is! Maybe try contacting the NMs of some of the corporate hospitals (HCA, Valley Health) in person?
Something else that I have heard (but not verified) is that many hospitals (not just in Las Vegas, but nationwide) are trying to avoid hiring full time nurses, but are trying to fill part time and PRN slot so that they can avoid paying benefits. Maybe working a couple PRN jobs at a couple different hospitals (at the higher hourly rate) would be a way to pay your bills and afford paying health insurance on your own.
If they don't even call back for PRN or part time positions, PM me, I may be able to come up with a couple of agencies that are hiring.
Good luck!

There is a career fair at green valley ranch on Tuesday the 19th. It was advertised in the Review Journal. Its from 12-4:30pm. All the big hospital systems will be there interviewing on the spot. HCA, St. Rose, UMC. If you are critical care our ER (sunrise) will gladly hire you. If not try the career fair. Good luck.
I still have gotten zero calls or interviews. I am not a Critical Care nurse but wish I was. I could probably be able to write my own ticket in terms of a job. I did take a ACLS class and the Trauma Nurse Core Course last year hoping I could get some ER experience but that hasn't gotten me any jobs yet. I will go to the Career fair today and see ehat is going on there. I have a feeling it will be a joke though, but I may be wrong. Thanks for all the suggestions/thoughts.
