Which specialty for most flexibility

I'm looking for some expert advice with regard to my career choice.

I'm currently an ACNP student at the Univ of Penn and am having second thoughts about how flexible a career as an ACNP truly is.

We're expecting our third child any day now and I will essentially have three children under three years of age.

My ideal work scenario is to work 3-4 days/week. I enjoy the flexibility shift work affords me.

Question: Which NP specialty will give me the greatest opportunity to work on a part time basis, FNP or ACNP?

As far as a career in the ED, do you find that FNP's or ACNP's are hired in that setting?

I think its not so much the type of NP you get, but rather your practice setting. For instance I work in nephrology, seeing dialysis patients in the outpt setting. We have 3 FNPs, one PA and me, a CNS and we all do the same job. However, as long as our pts are seen its up to us to get it scheduled. For instance, I might 11-13 hours one day and only 4 the next. I also do call every 4th weekend at two hospitals rounding on nephrology pts.

As to ER, in my area, they like the dual certification: ACNP plus PNP or ACNP plus ACPNP. I have an adult health CNS and just completed the peds CNS which qualifies me to see everyone plus my clinicals were in an acute setting.

I agree with traumas. I am an FNP and let me tell you, when I started being direct and honest about the hours I wanted to work (and stopped being apologetic), the offers started coming out of the woodwork. However, these were all office/outpatient settings. I had no less than THREE part-time job offers at graduation. I gave up benefits (don't need them anyway, husband has a great benefits package) but I work just 2.5 days per week with no call, no weekends, no holidays.

I'm a FNP and was hired part-time to work in pre-admissions testing/short procedure unit. I work M-F, 4 hour mornings, no weekends/holidays. LOVE my job!

As far as the ERs in the vicinity of UPENN, I know that they are looking for FNPs - but are hiring them mostly for fast-track.

What is your job like in pre-admissions testing/short procedure unit? I am a new FNP and the hospital that I have worked at for over 13 years in looking to make me a position in that area and I am not sure what it involves. Thanks for any info you can give me!
