I am 31 year old single father of 2 kids. My previous background has been in restaurant management. I have always had a desire to work in Medical. I went to Kaplan college to inquire about nursing. The adviser told me it would be 6 months before the next nursing start date and talked me into doing Medical Assistant X Ray Tech program while I am waiting. I am currently in this program but not really happy. I scored high enough on testing for nursing. I feel like I am wasting my time in this class. My question is this. Should I drop the XRAY part of the Medical Assistant Class and go into the RN program which starts in December or should I drop the entire Medical Assistant X ray tech program and start LPN in July? My goal is to be a RN. Some of my friends/family say stay in the MA program, drop the xray and just work as MA during RN school. Others tell me, drop MA and start LPN which will give you a better background into nursing. Any thoughts out there from anyone. I am so lost. Thank You in Advance.

Well it sounds like the person at Kaplan did their job in selling you a program you didn't need. If your goal is to get some experience and work while in nursing school, I'd see if any of your community colleges have a CNA program. The Red Cross may have one as well in your area. That'd probably be more flexible hours and give you some experience. If you want to be an RN, then I'd skip LPN. I'm guessing you are going to Kaplan because you want to be done quicker? It'll cost you quite a bit more but depends on your own situation.
Even if you go to Kaplan, I'd probably recommend enrolling at your local community college to get some of the classes done. You could ask Kaplan what they'd require. Things like biology, psychology, statistics, etc can easily be transferred from a community college. Be aware the same may not be true if you change your mind later as other schools may not accept classes from Kaplan.
