Which one

Two job offers: one in a beautiful well staffed place 40 miles away. The other, larger building, bad staffing but 1.5 miles away. I could convince the second place to pay $$$ since they can’t even keep an interim DNS.

Any opinions?

I've read your postings for several years now and I've admired your DON style and common sense. I would have enjoyed working for you if that had been possible.

You've had some bad luck for the past few years - you DESERVE GOOD now.

I'm sure you've done your research re their reputation, survey status, etc. It sounds like you have a chance for a good facility. TO ME, I'd say go for the 40 mile facility. The commute doesn't sound so awful. I've done travel in excess of 30 miles and more than an hour. (I used the travel time to listen to Spanish language tapes.)

It also sounds like 40 miles place is more staff-stable. It was always a sign of internal facility distress when there was a freq turnover of dept heads, esp DONs. To me, good staffing was always a benchmark of stability. You're too good to become just another name on a distressed place's payroll.

I wish you all the best you deserve.

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. It really is an easy choice even though my CD player is broken!
