Where to move to in Va?

Ok so here's my problem. We will be selling and moving sometime soon...could be in a few months..could be a few years. Depends. You know..the housing situation and all that. BUT we live in NJ. We've decided its not the place where we want to remain. We have thought seriously about VA. We would love to live in a mountainous area with gorgeous views lol. And I need to have a hospital within a resonable distance.

I've searched and read and gone Nuts trying to figure this out on the web.

Can any of you VA residents help a girl out here? I would prefer to stay in Northern VA so I am not toooo far from my family. And we love mountains. So I thought somewhere in the Shenandoah valley might be Drop dead wonderful. BUT until we can make a road trip..its just so hard to know.

So someone here tell me what they love about where they live. And does anyone have any recommendations for working? I'm an L&D nurse =)

Thanks in advance....hoping for some good recommendations!!

Hi Jodyangel,

I really dont know much about Northern Va, I live in Richmond. I dream of moving somewhere different myself once I complete nursing school. I have been to NJ a few times I liked shopping while there.

I hope someone comes along to give you some feedback and honest opinions about the Shenandoah Valley area. I just wanted to say hi because sometimes Virginia board can be a little dead.

Well thanks!! I hope someone else is reading lol.

Well NJ is just so expensive. And real estate is Off the Wall! So we'd like to buy a little land and settle in oneday. I guess we need to make a weekend trip. How do you like where you are now? Is is the "country" or citylike =)

Hi!

There aren't any moutains in Northern Virginia... If perhaps you went down I-66 farther towards west va there's more mountains out there.

as far as hospitals, there are wonderful hospitals in northern va incl. INOVA & Prince William.

If you're really serious about moving down here, i would consider taking a road trip because northern va is a pretty fast paced area and its not for everyone.

GOOD LUCK!!:D

If you like a more 'country' life, with some hills and beautiful views, but still reasonably close to home, look towards Charlottesville perhaps-you have the mega system sorround UVA, as well as Martha Jefferson. And Jersey is truly not too far to drive-we are down nearer the Beach area, and can get up that way in about 6 hours. C-Ville is about 3 hrs from us...

VA is not known for having the best salaries for nurses, but for many of the other important things in life, has some rich benefits-beach or mountains in couple hours drive; some great school systems and variety of educational opportunities depending on where you live; overall most Va areas are typically rated well in all the great places to live listings. (crime rates, environmental factors...just not nursing salaries, lol)

Best of luck!

Richmond is not the "country" it is considered city life but way slower than a fast paced big city like NJ. I have lived in Boston and traveled quite a few times to NY,NJ,Connecticut,Rhode Island, and PA so I see a vast difference. You will probably not miss the cost of living in such a big city but you will miss some of the amenities.

A few years ago land was still dirt cheap here, I bought 10 acres for $26k back in 2003 but now I cant buy even 1 acre for $26k, everything is getting so expensive here and I wonder if I should be considering a move to down south like Charlotte NC while housing is still affordable. I heard that Charlottesville is very pretty and may have what you are looking for, I think another poster mentioned it as well. Do a little research on Charlottesville before you make your trip down here. Keep us posted!

..but I'm assuming that because the cost of living will be SO much less, the smaller salary won't hurt. Yes?

You know its funny but when you're use to a certain salary, its hard to think of making less. But the cost of living here in jersey is killing me. And we live right by the Del. Mem. Bridge..so its South Jersey!! Oh yes a road trip is Def. something we have to do...thanks for the reply!!

I'm actually from South Jersey, presently living in Philly for the past year and will be moving to Northern VA (in the DC metro area). After much looking around I will not be making NEAR what I'm making in PHilly right now and worse, the cost of living is MORE expensive in N. VA than Philly/S. Jersey. Unfortunate. I can't talk about the rest of VA (the "country") but N. VA in the D.C. Metro area is def. expensive and the RN salary not so great.

Mountains? In northern VA? I've never seen them. O.o

love to recommend lynchburg...in view of the mountains, which are 20 minutes away, but we are on the eastern side, so much of the nasty weather stays in wv! low cost of living, friendly town, 4 colleges, and two hospitals (same system--one has ed/surgery/med-surg, the other psyche, rehab, and maternity)

pm me for more--and i even have an apt. at my house you're welcome to use if you check the town out!!:yeah:

I am in the midst of relocating from NJ (Ewing) to WV. There are lots of mountains here, lol. I work at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

Where abouts in NJ are you from, North, Central, or South Jersey? Is is so much cheaper down here, I can't believe it. PM me and I will be glad to give you further details.
