When to take the TEAS V practice tests

Published

Hey everyone,

I have the ATI study manual and I plan on buying the online exams as well. I just started studying for the exam this week. For those who are currently studying or have already took it, when you first start studying, did you take a practice test right away to see where you're at? Is this a good idea? Or have you read through a good amount of the book before attempting a practice test? I just wanted some ideas since all I would have for practice exam questions are just the two exams in the book and the two online exams from ati

Study as soon as you get it because you will find questions on the TEAS that you most likely forgot about. Study each subject in the ATI study Manuel and make sure you know each subject specifically so you can feel comfortable while in the test.

Hi, I haven't taken the actual test yet so I dont know how valuable my input is, but I'm just starting to study and I'm going to take one of the online tests as a diagnostic for what I need to work on and then take the second maybe 1-2 weeks before my test date.

I used the McGraw practice book so I am not familiar with the ATI book. Does the study guide also have practice tests? If not, I would take one practice test first as a baseline. Then you can see which concepts you are struggling with and focus on improving in those areas.

Thank you everyone for the replies. @trish_pkh I have only purchased the ATI book and I have bought the online exams. I did practice test 1 in the book just to gauge where I'm at. @milkpearl that sounds like a great idea, I was actually thinking of doing that, taking more of the practice exams two weeks prior to my test date that way I have reviewed more content by then. I'm pretty good with all the subject areas and I'm currently brushing up on some science concepts. I have to admit though, the math gets tedious although the algebra is relatively simple.

@trish_pkh is the mcgraw practice book good? they only have practice exams right?

In my experience, I felt ATI study guide was more relevant than the material covered by McGraw. However, the practice tests from McGraw book was still useful. During the week leading up to the exam, I took one practice test a day just so that I'd get into the rhythm of testing and more familiar with the type of questions to expect.

One thing that I did realize during the exam was that my practice tests were written/taken with pencil and paper. My actual exam was online and that format...took some adjusting so it may be worth purchasing the online practice tests just so you know exactly what to expect.

Good luck!

@bratty477 thank you! I'll consider buying the mcgraw practice tests too so I have more exams to work with. It can't hurt to get more practice in.

I took the test back in June and started studying daily about a month and a half prior. My friends that had already taken the TEAS advised me NOT to wait until the day before, or several days before the test to take the practice tests. They did the tests early but still never got a score higher than 68 on the actual test. However, against their recommendations, I purposely waited until the day before my exam to take both practice tests. I wanted to make sure I knew everything beforehand, and studied as if EVERYTHING was foreign to me. My first practice test I received a 72 and it made me so discouraged. Feeling as if all I needed was to get the new exam layout jitters out of the way, I immediately took practice test #2 right after getting my first score. Then I got a 78. So a little better. By the end of the real TEAS exam the next day I pulled an 82. I had never met anyone during my pre-req journey that had gotten over an 85, so I was pleased with my score. I don't plan on a retake unless absolutely necessary. No way.
