When to send out my resume????

Hi there. Unfortunately the job market out here for new grads is pretty slim here in Boston. It took me forever to find a job and I graduated May 2006, and had been applying to jobs since that February. After I graduated, I concentrated on studying for the boards, then after I passed, I concentrated on looking for a job again. I actually started at Beth Israel this past November...so I was fortunate to be able to get something. I would say enjoy you're wedding and your trip to Hawaii....but finding a job out here is hard. I guess you really have to be proactive when job searching. All the best, and sorry if I didn't completely answer your question.

I don't think you should send them out now, becasue there will be hundreds of new graduates in your area that will be competing to work in June. Just enjoy your time off, and concentrate on the jobsearch after you get back, or maybe a month before you leave for Hawaii.

Thanks for the info.....during the long time that you waited for a job, did you have to keep applying to BIDMC to get offered a job, or did you get the job after your 1st try? just out of curiosity, where else did u apply? Thanks again,

Hey LIZH18. I applied to Beth Israel twice..but on different floors. I got an interview the first time, but did not get the position..this was back over the summer I think..can't remember what month. I applied a second time in October for a different floor, and I got the position, and that is where I work now. I also applied to MGH (I heard they turn down A LOT of new grads...they prefer nurses with some experience), Brigham (pretty much almost impossible unless you know someone who works there), VA in West Roxbury (actually got a job there but turned it down since I already started orientation at BIDMC), New England Baptist, and Boston Medical Center. I found BIDMC to be pretty good about getting in touch with people for interviews. The first time I applied to BIDMC, I got an email like two weeks later for an interview. The second time I applied, it was one week after I had applied. Hope this helps. :)

For you, I'd say meet as many people as you can. Start applying now, but not like crazy. You know, a couple of applications a week or something. Get used to the feel of it.

Also, perhaps more importantly, try to go to an open house, or any event where there will be nurse recruiters or managers present. If you meet someone who likes you, then there's a good chance they'll wait for you.

Also, I had the opposite experience to Dolphin--I ended up finding a position at Brigham, and found BI to be impenetrable. The point is, it IS a tough market for new grads, you may run into difficulty where you least expect it, but don't give up hope on your first choice because there are ways of getting in anywhere.

Wow you were able to find a position at the Brigham???? I applied there but got nothing...Did you know someone there?

Actually, it wasn't easy. I applied there for >30 positions over the course of 4 months. And I know a number of people there. I did end up getting an interview based on a personal reference. It was a harrowing experience.

At BIDMC though, I got nothing. I applied for 5-6 jobs there (I stuck with the posted CNI positions, and there weren't many posted). I'm impressed that you got a response from so few attempts. Just goes to show how different everyone's experience can be.
