Hello everyone!! Glad I found these forums! I'm a 22 y/o male/newly licensed LVN here in Southern CA. I initially did my LVN as a stepping stone to get my RN. Unfortunately, 2 classes from the university I used to attend did not transfer to the community college that I am currently attending/did my LVN at, and I had to retake the 2 courses. Because of this, I'm stuck waiting until Fall 2010 before I start the school's 2 semester LVN to RN bridge program.
I aspire to work in the ED and/or ICU as a RN (depending on where the economy leads me) with hopes of eventually becoming a CRNA somewhere down the line. Currently, I'm taking the last of my BSN pre-reqs so I can transfer to a state school as soon as I finish up my RN. I had a goal of becoming a RN by 23, but that has sadly been shattered.. haha..7 months of waiting is going to kill me.
Given the current job market, and the fact that I'm unable to leave the state, what are some things I can do to stay fresh with knowledge? Are there any certifications other than an IV cert that LVNs can do?? I really want to work, but I've dropped off about 10 resumes, and still have no call-backs. I'm likely going to drop off 20 more resumes, but options other than LTC are pretty limited for VNs, and LTC is definitely not my thing.
Any suggestions??!!!

Tricky question... have you thought about maybe natural disaster trainning (Haiti)? IMO things like that would help keep you up to date on skills, but then again im sure it wont take long to do a class like that. i will be thinking and post later!!! GOOD question tho!!!
That could be an options I suppose. Thank you.

Hey man..I'm in the exact same boat as you! Got sidelined waiting for a semester (HOPEFULLY only 1 semester) for my LVN to RN. I don't even want to work as a LVN, but at this point a paycheck is a paycheck. We're YOUNG though. The way I look at it is..I try not to get bogged down by a time line. It does nobody good. A realistic goal is CRNA by the time I'm like 30ish lol.
Anyways...the average RN graduate is like 30, so you're still way ahead of the curve buddy. Don't stress.. Good luck and God bless. Oh and as far as Certifications go, maybe you can get your EMT?? This may open doors up sometime down the road, and only takes 1 semester. At least this is what I'm thinking about doing.
