What to do?

I am a new grad that started in the middle of September. I was hired for the new Neuro unit but there was not a preceptor available for me because of so many new grads starting. For the last month I've been in Orthopedics. I'm suppose to start Neuro tomorrow night. Everyone is asking me how I'm liking work and it is hard for me to answer. I like nursing but I haven't been on my unit yet. Then today I talked to a friend in the NICU that said they needed more nurses and that made me start to think about switching units because I was originally interested in NICU but it wasn't available. It still isn't available (there is a wait list) but they are in need of new nurses and if they can get the ok from the higher ups they can hire more. I guess I just need some encouragement and advice on what to do? Should I wait and see how Neuro works out or try to get on the waiting list at NICU???? I'vw liked every area I've worked in so far (cardiac, ortho, NICU, Critical Care Unit, and Cardiac Outpatient). Just trying to figure out what I should do????

Is the neuro unit a stable unit? The choice is really up to you, it depends on what you really want to do. However, you should keep in mind that, as a new grad, any critical care unit will be more difficulty, especially the NICU.

The Neuro unit is general and intermediate care (4 patients on average, the most 6).

Learn basic first then advance as tolerated to more critical consistency. I started this way and NEVER regreted it! I am comfortable floating from ICU to MS . Been a ICU nurse now for 4 yrs.

also, just because someone told you that NICU needs more nurses, doesn't mean the higher ups will see it that way. Right now, TPTB are cutting corners to the bone, so it wouldn't shock me that they wouldn't add many positions. Wait until they are posted to make a decision. Also, being new, you may want to check the facility policiy-some require a wait time before you can transfer to another dept, and even those that allow it may be thinking that so new in your career you are a "job hopper" and not a solid employee-believe me, I know it sounds stupid, but those management people think in mysterious ways sometimes. Good luck with your decision!

how you put this is too cute!
