What Now?????

I have 36yrs experience as a RN working on Psychiatric/Substance Abuse units. I live in upstate NY where there are only 3 inpatient units with next to zero staff turnover.Ihave applied 4times when a position would open and would hear nothing. After placing several call I would get- " your applic.&resume has been forwarded on to the manager -if she's interested she'll call -end of story. I have only worked in this field so I am struggling to find a job I can utilize my skills for and that I would be even considered for. I have only livesd in this area for the past 4 yrs. All of my career has been nearer NYC-unfortunately I can't relocate right now. Any thoughts on alternatives I could look into would be GREATLY appreciated. I have management exp. as well as conducting workshops/groups for the community on various topics (which I loved) Thanks,Spirit08

Have you tried correctional facilities? You may even find a correctional treatment facility, that is court ordered drug treatment. I worked for 14 yrs. in a correctional facility and when I transitioned out, psych nursing was the best fit for me....so I thought maybe just the opposite may work for you! Good Luck!

to theres2U- Thanks for your responding, I appreciate your time. Actually, that did cross my mind- so I'll follow thru Thanks again Spirit08

Go in person and just introduce yourself to the hiring Manager. You've tried the HR route and you see what a mess it is. Now, take the bull by the horns. She might appreciate your moxie and your strong desire to work in a great place.

HR can be such a roadblock. Nothing to lose, really, by being direct. Have your resume with you, license, SS card, references.

Just say you are considering working in Psych and would he or she mind talking with you about that type of Nursing.

Specializes in critical care; community health; psych.

Have you tried outpatient like methadone treatment, etc.?
