What are the 12 languages for nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was reading on the NANDA FAQ page that The American Nurses Association recognizes 12 languages for nursing. Then I did a Google search and saw other sources that say there are 13 languages for nursing. But I could never find out what exactly they are talking about. Does anyone know what these languages are? Thanks

Just did a bit of googling on this. They're not talking about "languages" such as English, Spanish, etc. What they're talking about is standardized language to be used by nurses, such as the NANDA nursing diagnoses, and other systems for classifying things that nurses do. The first link below lists 12 "languages" recognized by the ANA as of 2003 (on p. 2, in a box on left side of page). The second link, published later, recognizes 13 languages. I don't see the 13 listed in any obvious place in the article, but my eyes were glazing over just skimming it. I've never liked the NANDA nursing diagnoses, and I suspect the other systems are all equally silly, but I guess that's just my bias.

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much. That is *exactly* what I was looking for.

Well, as a OLDER career change nursing student (previous legal background), I'm glad to see the comments about the nursing diagnoses, because, frankly, by the time we get out of nursing school, we're going to be crazy trying to deal with the terms of nursing diagnoses....especially harder for someone who's read thousands of pages of charts/nursing notes since the late 1970s. I have a basic understanding of why nursing diagnoses are needed; however, I'd like to see the whole thing revamped before it's totally and uncontrollably out of hand...which, unfortunately, it may already be. Thanks for a great post and I'm enjoying the allnurses.com site!
