My homework assignment refers to a patient being admitted to a HAMS unit for GI bleeding. I have searched online but I cannot seem to find what a HAMS unit is. Will someone please tell me what HAMS stands for and give me a brief explanation of what occurs when a patient is in a HAMS unit?

OP:
I'm not 100% positive on this but it may be a euphemism, stealth name if you will, for obese, GI bleeding folks with portal hypertension.
And obviously an attempt to comply with all HIPPA regulations. But again, I'm not sure. But these days specialized units are all the rage. Probably some corporate contrivance. Hope this helps.

A HAM unit is the tastiest unit in the hospital.
OP: I just received an important phone call from a nurse friend of mine who works in research at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta; and I quote:
"At my hospital they combined the HAMS unit with the EGGS unit. I think the nurse manager got a big promotion and, of course, a big bonus for facilitating that one because CDC studies show that when combined the synergistic effect of doing this has proven that in the long run MNXRLT4U.(title of pending research paper)
Isn't this just another example of how nursing research has changed the world for the better?
No doubt about it!!! Right up there with the Jarvik 7 if you ask me.

Oroville Hospital in CA has a job posting for a nurse in the ICU/HAMS unit.
google oroville hams unit
You'll get a link to a PDF file job description for an RN working in that unit.
I'm guessing HAMS is something like High Acuity Med Surg, since the nurse reports to Director of Critical Care Services
Funny y'all! :) Yeah it's High Acuity Medical-Surgical.
