What to expect?

So I've not yet worked as a nurse of any sort. I'm sure I can't really know what it's like until I do, but I'll ask anyway - what's it like being an RN?

Granted, there are tons of different areas of nursing, and so many variables, I'd like to hear your descriptions of what the job generally entails. Twelve hours a day is a long day. Those shifts have to be filled with tons of obligations.

Anyone care to give a run down of what a typical day as a nurse consists of?

Also, just a quick side question - the typical 3 days, 12 hours - are they done back to back? Like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday? Or spread apart? Can you request to work three in a row, so you have four days off in a row every week?

Unions obtained paid vacation, statutory holidays, health benefits, etc for workers.

So, if you don't want the benefits of being a union member with the protection it affords workers...

Nursing is, in my estimation, so embroiled in being human and in the 'human condition' that it is a lot like life itself. Nurses see people at their very worst and their very best. You see tragedy beyond what you can imagine and victories and joy as well. It is a job that can tax you to the very ends of your limits and elevate you to the most profound state of gratitude and appreciation for being able to do what you are doing. Often the most difficulties arise from your coworkers, the Doctors and the Adminstration. It is all part of the job.

You will learn more about yourself then you ever knew. Some people can't handle so much "humanity"....but it is life, I say, and love it or not, it is why we are here on this little planet, to help each other through.
