Hi everyone, I am very confused as to what to do about nursing school. I have been in school two years, all pre req's are finished, yet I still have not been accepted into any programs. I was wait listed on one, so I may start in the fall but what if I don't? I really cannot afford to sit out another whole year because a good portion of the schools where I live admit once a year. I have a 3.0 gpa (could be better, but I work two full time jobs), great recommendations, what am I doing wrong?
Do I say forget it and change my major? I do not know which avenue to take now, I am so confused, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I live in the Dallas, Texas area and its very hard to get into a 2 year program here. I was told anything less than a 4.0, and its almost impossible.Of course others on here who live in other places have posted thats not true where they live so I am not sure about whats its like where you are. You do have some options.
1. You could go back and retake whatever you need to in order to get your GPA up, and reapply.
2. You could try to get into an LVN program which I hear is sometimes easier as their are less people trying to get in, and then bridge over once your an LVN. I will consider this option if I don't get in pretty quick once I apply in the fall.
3. You could go to a major university, and get a BSN instead. Around here there is no waiting list to get into the big university nursing programs. The only draw back for me is that I would have to go back to CC and take a few history course, a couple of more english classes, government classes, and PE classes that I need to move on to a major university. If you have been in college before or have another degree you may not need to do that.
4. I have read that there are diploma programs for nursing. This is where you work for a hospital, and they teach you everything you need to know in order to nurse. When you are finished you get a diploma, but not a degree. There are none of these places in my area, but you might check yours.
You have come to far to throw in the towel. You can do it!!!!!

I work at a VA hospital where the first day I worked on the unit, at least 3 nurses told me how they hated their job. Two were RN's with a BSN. When I asked why they chose nursing if they didn't like this kind of work, they said that they could not get it to the program they really wanted. Nursing is a hard enough job, be sure of what you want. Don't let others influence your decision, because in the end, you will be the one to acually do the work. Good Luck.

Going through the same thing!!! I am done as of this past semester and was not accepted to the Fall program. I am taking a class that is not required in the fall though just to stay in "student" status at the school. I think I am in for Spring, but won't be sure for a while.
Good luck to you!!! It's up to you what you want to do.

You know what the best advice is..BE PERSISTENT! Call those schools that you are on the waiting list for and plead your case. Find out who (at the university) is over the admissions (the commitee---the people who rate you on a point system). If you talk to other people they will just give you the run around (trust me, I know from experience). I went straight to the people that are over admissions and told them my situation and they made a way for me instantly....people try to help those that help themselves, trust!

I agree with the other posters to be persistent! Call the school and talk with an admissions advisor and ask him/her what specifically you can do to make your application stronger and more competitive. Then follow the advice and re-apply. I have 2 friends in my program that did this and were accepted on their 3rd try. They were told to take a certain class, volunteer in a healthcare setting, etc. to build a stonger application. My school goes on a points based system so the higher your points, the more competitive you application.
Good Luck!
Thanks for all the answers. I will regroup and see how things go this next semester.

You could check about online programs. I don't know a lot about them, but I know of two paramedics at the hospital I am at that are attending them in order to get their RNs as they both full-time and then some. They do clinicals close to home and I guess have to travel to do lab checkouts. Again, I don't know much more than that.
Best wishes!!
