Vent: L and D nurses please check your post partum orders

While I understand your frustration, have you brought this up to the nurse reporting off? If a gap in communicate chronic issue in handoffs exists then it needs to be brought up to management and worked on as a unit/s so that staff is properly educated. It all comes down to patient safety and communication is key to that happening.

Why was the patient on L&D for two days s/p surgery?

They kept that pt for two days?

Anyways, I understand your frustrations though with L&D not checking orders, especially for those precipitous deliveries where they don't have time to put in an IV. The lack of an IV isn't a big deal but sending the patient up PP without not one single STAT lab drawn is unacceptable. Two things I have done differently: 1. When they call to give me report I look through orders and tell them they must draw or cancel any outstanding labs I see still "pending" and 2. I happily inform them I WILL write them up if xyz isn't done.

Anyway, what I was tying to say is that it sounds like the two of your units need to work on communication. That and more education on safe and appropriate handoffs.

Mel, it's no secret communication and JACHO standards for handoff is lacking. I've even heard MDs and other units complain about L&D. We have spoken to L&D managers about our frustrations; little was done. I don't work for a small community hospital, but a large well renowned magnet teaching hospital. My previous job at a community hospital had way better communication.

Yes, the post partum nurses do communicate this issue during report and it is often shrugged off. The only way to fix it per management is to do incident reports. I rather not do incidents reports however it seems to be the only way to get nurses to understand that not carrying out PP orders is a problem.

Klone our mag moms stay on LD for 1-2 days. Any mom that had a major complication usually stay on L and D for a couple of days.
