VAP Guard

Just wondering from other NICUs around that have used VAP guard in their units.....now that it is no longer being made, do you have a new product or plan in mind for oral care in neonates?

Thanks in advance...... :D

For now we are just using sterile water....

We use MBM on a swab for oral care or sterile water if MBM is unavailable. We have never used the guards. I think we have a very low rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

:yeah: That's awesome that MBM is used.

We are now using a product call Biotine. It is a gel similar to VAP guard, but the tube is good for the whole length of the babies stay. We have only been using it for a month now. Seems to be an ok product.

Personally I hated VAP guard, it caused way to many secreations.

we haven't been able to get biotin yet but our adult units and picu have it so we occasionally call them for it...but i just read an article about using EBM b/c of it's bacteria-killing abilities and everything...i may present it to our mgt this week and see about adopting it as a policy!!

Mind providing the reference for the article? I've looked around but haven't been able to find any actual research literature on the topic.

Biotine is a great product. You can use biotine swabs or just use untreated swabs and dip them in either sterile water or breastmilk. We have been getting kits from Trademark Medical and that has helped our compliance. Our VAP has lowered since using the kits.
