IN clinicals, one of the floor nurses said that when you give vanco, always flush with 100 mls of NS before and after.
I triewd looking this up in my drug book, but it never mentioned flushing with that much NS. How would I know to do this if I ever had to give this on the floor? Is it common knowledge?

No it's not true....Vancomycin's given usually in 250cc q 12h, and alot of the population that get it are elderly. if you flush with 100 cc before and after that's 450 cc per dose or almost a liter a day just for antibiotics. So no you don't. No medications warrants flushing 100 cc NS before infusing.

No. What is her reasoning? Did she mean 10 ccs?
SHe filled up a large syringe with NS, so it was definitly more than 10 ccs. She jus tsaid you "always" do that with vancomycin. Wouldn't you usally just flush with like 2-3 ml NS before/after injecting a med?

It is usual to flush with 10cc NS prior to hanging the vanco then 10cc NS again after the vanco has infused. If you have a PICC, central line, or Port, you would follow that last NS flush with 3-5cc Heparin.

your just flushing to clear out your device. So unless your IV device has in internal volume of 90cc, no need for the large infusion...............
