Vaginal Prep solutions

Is anyone using an acceptable substitute for Technicare, which is no longer available, for lady partsl preps on patients with an iodine allergy/sensitivity?

CHG states on the bottle that it is not recommended for lady partsl preps and we are not comfortable using this in the event of a lawsuit.

Thanks!:)

Hmmm...don't know the answer to that one. I will look at some literature and let you know what I find.

We use Ivory soap and rinse with NS. The Ivory soap emulsifies and solubalizes bacteria so it can be rinsed away. It is not bactericidal, but it at least gets the area cleaner.

we're using castile soap

We use this as well. Forgot about it!

we use Johnsons baby shampoo (NOT baby wash) diluted in NS, i cant find the article in my files right now, but will keep looking for it. I've also read that a saline soaked sponge stick can be an effective prep--its more about the friction you create when you prep than the solution on the sponge.

Our policy is to use technicare on a lady partsl prep allergic to iodine. If we cannot use technicare, we simply do a saline wash.

Are you still using technicare? I thought it got pulled off the market.

Some surgeons still request it and there is a small bottle remaining locked up in the supervisors office. Honestly, I haven't used it in 7 months or so. There have been no reports of damage to patients, and I don't believe they recalled already distributed techni-care...they have just had to stop production of the product.

We use Betadine

We use Betadine

For patients with an iodine allergy? (That was the original question.)

We use Technicare for Iodine allergy patients on vag preps

We use Exidine on patients with betadine allergies. We use this all the time in our cysto cases regardless of allergy status. Most gyn cases still use betadine scrub and paint with the exception of people with allergies.
