VA HBPC RN

Currently we do not have an EWL at all. We have room for growth in our program.

I used allnurses.com to assist me in applying for and accept my HBPC position - so I figured I would post my experience to help others! Anyways, I started HBPC in May of 2017. I was really hesitant about accepting this position mostly due to safety concerns, HH horror stories etc. However, I am so glad I did accept the position (in part due to the great comments on allnurses!). My day starts at 0700 - other nurses start their day at 0730, but it is open for us to choose. I will typically see 3 patients in a day. The VA gives me a car (which is nicer than my own), an iPhone and a computer. My Veterans are absolutely amazing and I have not had a really bad experience yet. Most of their homes are clean and their family members take great care of them. Most veterans who have complex needs - pressure ulcers, foleys, tube feedings etc. will have HBPC as their primary care clinic and will also have outside agencies such as a home health nurse, physical therapist etc. to assist them with other needs. This is great becasue most of the time I do not have to worry about going to change foleys every month or spending long periods of time on bathing the patient or doing wound care. We are their clinic - so whatever the clinic does, we do (labs, immunizations, medication management etc.). The best part of the job is making your own schedule, not having management down your back, eating wherever & whenever you want :) and taking care of these wonderful Veterans. To elaborate further on my day - my shift is 0700-1530. Once it is 1531 I am DONE - there is no on-call or mandatory overtime. Charting is also not terrible. We have one note that we complete, but the narrative portion does take some time (depending on what kind of nurse you are). I have 45 patients on my panel - our quota per week is 10 patient visits. That is two a day! Although I do try to see at least 3 a day.

Can you tell me what your experience lever was and what grade/step you were hired in at. I currently have applied for a position that is HBPC and I an trying to figure out where I'll rank in order to determine if I can take a pay cut?

I was already at the VA working on a Med Surg unit when I was hired with HBPC. But with 3.5 years of nursing experience and a MSN I am a nurse 2, step 2.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any insight on VA pay. I just retired from the US Public Health Service and got an offer for a job at the VA. I have over 25 years experience, BSN and just retired from the military. Just trying to get an idea of the pay.

Hello, and thank you for your service!! The VA Pay is determined by a nursing board which looks at your level of education, your years of experience as well as any board certifications you might have. Your experience is matched up to the 9 dimensions of Nursing Practice. I have heard that you can appeal if the amount is not what you expected. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Can you work 4 10hr shifts per week in hbpc as a RN?

We work 9-hour shifts with every other Friday off. I have always thought four 10 hour shifts would work out well but have never asked if I could switch.
